NUPENG AND DANGOTE ARE AT ODDS, AND FUEL MARKETERS ARE URGING PRESIDENT TINUBU TO STEP IN AND PREVENT A NATIONWIDE STRIKE ON MONDAY
The dispute centers on Dangote's plan to import 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered trucks for direct fuel distribution to retailers, which NUPENG claims will undermine workers' rights and threaten the livelihoods of thousands of Petroleum Tanker Drivers .
NUPENG has accused Dangote Refinery of anti-labor practices, including refusing to allow new drivers to join unions, which is a breach of the 1999 Constitution and international labor conventions . The union has called for a strike, which could disrupt the country's fuel distribution system.
Fuel marketers, including PETROAN and IPMAN, are calling on President Tinubu to intervene and prevent the strike. They argue that a single company should not dominate the value chain and that workers' welfare must be protected. The Nigeria Labour Congress has also weighed in, condemning Dangote's labor practices as "crude and dangerous."
